Detail Photography

details11main
I photographed firefighter explorers and wanted to show how detail photography can enhance your visual storytelling.
The first image is the main photo for the whole story.
The explorers were practicing ladder work and I was able to make an image that will be the main image for the story.
While the explorers were getting ready, I had a few moments to grab a few detail photos.

The boots just cried out to be photographed.
They represent the miles of footwork that lies ahead for the recruits.

The leader of this group of explorers laid his helmet down for a moment.
I was able to grab a quick image.
It really helps to give more detail and richness to the story.
I like that it says chief on the front.
Lastly:

Hoses! No story on firefighters can be complete without hoses.
I was able to grab these images in about 30 seconds and yet they add so much to this visual story.
Be on the lookout for detail photos at every photo shoot and you will start creating a more richly layered story.
Think of small vignettes that show different sides to your subject.
For example, the helmet shot, speaks of the authority of the firefighters.
The hoses, are a vital element that water is delivered by and finally, the boots that serve as the foundation for every firefighter.
Be more open during the shoot to looking around and being aware of your surroundings.
Be inspired!
